Fuel Oil Grades: M100, M40

Characteristics
Fuel oil is one of the most common products of refining crude oil. The input oil composition largely determines physical and chemical properties of fuel oil (viscosity, density, calorific value) and percentage of sulphur and ash. Fuel oil is a dark brown liquid with specific smell. Fuel oil can be subjected to higher degree of distillation under vacuum gradually increasing the distillate end point. Residue obtained as a result of vacuum distillation is more viscous. Approximate viscosity of the product is determined at 50° and specified in numbers that mark a particular fuel oil – F5, M40, etc. The most popular grade of fuel oil is M100; it is classified as heating oil. From among the other types of heating oils, M100 is one of the heaviest fuels. Fuel oil M100 is characterized by low content of sulphur and ash, however, it has a high setting point due to its high viscosity. Adding diesel to fuel oil M100 one can produce fuel oil M40 with a reduced setting point. Prior heating immediately in a heater decreases fuel oil viscosity and improves its burning. Presence of diesel fuel in the composition allows using fuel oil M40 at lower subzero temperatures preventing its setting.
Technical norms for fuel oil M100:
  • Funnel viscosity at 80°C: at most 16
  • Ash content: from 0.05 to 0.14%
  • Mass fraction of solids: from 0.10 to 1%
  • Mass fraction of sulphur (for low-sulphur fuel oil): up to 1%
  • Mass fraction of water: up to 1%
  • Flash point should be at least –110 °С
  • Setting point: at most 25°С
  • Calorific value (lower) on a dry basis (non-rejectable): at least 40,530 kJ/kg
Application
Fuel oil is one of the most common types of fuel used in industry and utilities. It is used as fuel for steam boilers, boiler plants and industrial furnaces. Usually, in summer season, fuel oil consumption slightly goes down, however, it is not generally attributed to seasonal fuels, therefore is in demand at any time of the year. Fuel oil is used as heating fuel:
  • in power – utilities,
  • in shipping – sea and river fleet,
  • in industry.
It is designed for vehicles, stationary boiler and processing plants. It can be utilized for heating systems, furnaces and boiler houses; fuel oil is also used to produce oil tars and engine oils.
