Characteristics
Diesel fuel consists of many different hydrocarbons, whose boiling point is within the range from 180°C to 360°C. Fuel is produced by stage distillation of crude oil. Diesel fuel is supplemented by various additives obtained from heavy oils by cracking using heat, pressure and catalytic additives. Diesel fuel contains sulphur in form of chemical compounds depending on the quality of crude oil and components used in the mixture. Since a diesel engine operates without external ignition, diesel fuel once injected into hot compressed air in a combustion chamber should self-ignite with the minimum possible delay (ignition delay period). Ignition quality is defined as a property of fuel which determines the start of fuel self-ignition in a diesel engine. Flash point is a temperature at which a combustible liquid produces enough steam into ambient air for the mixture of air and steam above the liquid surface to be able to ignite from an ignition source. Calorific value of diesel fuel mostly depends on its density. Ignition quality is expressed by the so called cetane number (CN). The higher cetane number is, the easier fuel ignites. However, for the optimum operation of modern diesel engines (quiet operation, reduction of harmful emissions) it is preferable to have fuel with increased cetane number at about 50. High-quality diesel fuel contains a lot of paraffins with high cetane numbers. By contrast, different types of aromatic hydrocarbons contained in cracking compounds deteriorate ignition. At low temperatures deposition of paraffin crystals can cause plugging of a fuel filter, and therefore, lead to fuel cutoff. Paraffin deposition can start under unfavourable conditions at about 0°C. To prevent this, when cold weather begins it is needful to see about winter diesel fuel in advance.Application
