Bitumen grades: 50/70, 70/100, 100/150, 160/220

The first number in the grade is softening point, the second one is hardness in stiffened state
Characteristics
Bitumen is translated from Latin as ‘mountain resin’. Petroleum road bitumen is a natural or artificial hydrocarbon mixture. It is attributed to dark petroleum products and can be solid or resinlike. This petroleum product has two forms – viscous and liquid.
Application
Viscous form is used to produce hot bitumen concrete mixtures (asphalting and other activities in warm season). Liquid bitumen is used in production of cold bitumen concrete mixtures. A distinguishing characteristic of this form is presence of solvents which evaporate in the open air once bitumen mass solidifies. Liquid bitumens are produced by mixing viscous bitumens with distillate fractions-diluents (solvents). Liquid bitumens are used to glue components of the mixture. They are designed to extend the season of road construction works. In addition to production of asphalt mixtures, petroleum road bitumen is utilised in production of bitumen emulsions.
  • Viscous bitumens are classified into BND (petroleum road bitumens) and BN (petroleum bitumens);
  • Viscous petroleum road bitumens are produced in the following grades: BND 40/60, BND 60/90, BND 90/130, BND 130/200, BND 130/200;
  • Petroleum bitumens (BN): BN 60/90, BN 90/130, BN 130/200, BN 200/300.

Modified bitumen emulsions

Characteristics
Bitumen emulsion is produced by mixing water solution, emulsifier and petroleum bitumen (fraction 30–70%), i.e. by dispersing bitumen in water solution of emulsifier. It is homogenous low viscosity flowing brown or dark brown liquid. Bitumen emulsion is prepared on a basis of standard viscous ordinary or modified bitumen. Bitumen emulsions are produced using special equipment and emulsifiers. Bitumen emulsion produced from modified bitumen is modified bitumen emulsion. It comprises additives (latex, polyethylene, epoxy resin, synthetic gum, synthetic resin, etc.). Bitumen emulsions are classified by three criteria:
  • electric charge of granules;
  • breaking time;
  • weight content of bitumen.
Depending on electric charge of granules, emulsions are categorized into anionic and cationic. Based on breaking time, emulsions are classified into rapid setting, medium setting, slow setting and superstabilized. There are two main types of bitumen emulsions – direct and inverse. This classification is based on composition. Depending on bitumen content in emulsions, they split into 45%, 50%, 55%, 60%, 65% and 70%.
Application
Thanks to its relatively low viscosity bitumen emulsion provides favourable conditions for treatment of road materials. It is used for tack coats and surface dressing of pavement layers.
